Hapé ceremony is at the heart of what we do at Pillars of Light. We are the only Amazonian hapé apothecary with a physical ceremonial space in the United States — and we bring that same depth and care to every in-person ceremony we host.

What Is a Hapé Ceremony?

Hapé (pronounced ha-PAY, also spelled rapé) is a sacred plant medicine made from powdered Nicotiana rustica and the ash of sacred Amazonian trees. It has been used by Indigenous Amazonian peoples for thousands of years as a tool for grounding, clearing, focus, and spiritual connection.

A hapé ceremony is not simply the act of applying the medicine — it is a structured, intentional container that includes:

- Opening prayer and intention-setting

- Preparation of the space with smudging and sacred tobacco

- Administration of hapé via Tepi (server pipe) — one nostril, then the other

- Silent time to sit with the medicine and allow it to work

- Gentle guidance and support from your facilitator

- Integration discussion at the close

What to Expect

Hapé works quickly. Within seconds of administration, you may feel a rushing sensation, pressure behind the eyes, the urge to clear the sinuses, and a wave of stillness that follows. The medicine tends to bring the mind to silence and the body to the present moment.

Every person's experience is different. Some feel deeply grounded and clear. Some move through emotional release. Some experience a physical purge (common and considered part of the process). Your facilitator holds space for whatever arises.

Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes including preparation and integration time.

Do I need experience with hapé to book a ceremony?

No. Many of our ceremony clients are experiencing hapé for the first time. Your facilitator will walk you through everything and ensure you feel prepared and comfortable.

What should I do before the session?

Arrive having eaten lightly (not a heavy meal). Avoid alcohol the night before. Wear comfortable clothing. Come with an open intention — even if that intention is simply curiosity.

Is the medicine safe?

Hapé is non-psychoactive and does not alter consciousness in the way psychedelics do. It is legal in the United States. As with any plant medicine, individual responses vary. If you have significant health concerns, contact us before booking.

Can I choose my hapé blend?

Yes. During your session, your facilitator may suggest a blend based on your intention. You are also welcome to choose from our in-store selection of 65+ varieties before the ceremony.
